Decisions

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it. Isaiah‬ ‭30:21‬ ‭NIV‬‬
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Psalms‬ ‭32:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Decisions are hard! We make decisions every single day without realizing it, but when it’s time to make a big life-changing choice, all our focus is suddenly drawn to that one moment. The huge decisions throughout life seem to be the ones which drain energy away from us because of their complexity and uncertainty. The biggest decisions in life are ones where we might not be able to see but a few tiny steps ahead. We might not be able to see the bigger picture or how our life will change, but we can see that whatever we decide will change things in our lives when the choice is made.

For me, I have been faced with what feels like a hundred huge decisions in the last few months and even the last couple of years. It has been stressful for me to think through every single aspect of the choices to be made while trying to make sure I make the right decision. I‘ve struggled with knowing which choice is the right one. I’ve taken a long time to make some of these decisions and I still haven’t even chosen with some of them yet. It’s taken me a while to fully accept what God is telling me or how I have been feeling. I haven’t wanted to regret my decisions or make the wrong one.

I think that deep down we want to choose the right thing because we want to do what God wants us to do and we want to stay on His path for our lives. And sometimes the hardest part with any decision is knowing what He wants us to do.

God leads us to decision when He decides to close and open doors in our lives. I think that without us realizing it, He has already made some decisions for us and all we have to do is start paying attention to the signs. We have to attune ourselves to listen to His voice. He doesn’t always send us huge messages or arrows in the sky pointing to where we should go, but He does send us hints so that we know what He wants us to do when we look for it. He speaks to us in little ways and His voice is present but quiet. It requires us to listen and believe that He does things for reasons we may not understand. The signs He gives us may not be what we would want or ask for, but they are exactly what we need.

As humans we desire to understand everything. We want to know why something is happening or has happened, what to do, when to do it, why we should do stuff... But I’ve come to the realization that we aren’t going to understand everything. And because we aren’t going to understand everything, we have to make decisions through faith. We have to rely on Him to provide us with the answer and the guidance to do what is necessary in the time it should be done. We cannot wait around to understand everything perfectly before we make our decisions because then we would never make them. Sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves is simply step out in faith and make the decision our soul and our God is telling us to make. Sometimes we just have to trust that He knows what will happen next even if we do not. We have to trust that although our lives will be different after we make our choices, our lives will be better because they will be in line with Him.
